Maritime security is one of 12 core issues in the National Security Strategy. The Ministry chairs the Maritime Security Oversight Committee which brings together 11 maritime security agencies to oversee this core issue. It acts as the Strategic Coordination Agency for maritime security, leads maritime security policy and implementation of the Maritime Security Strategy. The Strategy was first published in December 2020 and refreshed in June 2024.
This guide aims to helps operators of small autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) comply with New Zealand regulations when intending to operate their vessels within the territorial sea and/or Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of New Zealand. The operation of small / non-SOLAS, autonomous (uncrewed) surface vessel in New Zealand’s maritime area is a regulated activity. This includes launching into the territorial sea from the New Zealand coast or a port, being deployed from another vessel, or sailing into New Zealand’s EEZ, and territorial sea.
