Amend IMM 1000 or Confirmation of Permanent Residence

When you landed as a permanent resident in Canada, you will have received a Record of Landing IMM 1000 or a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) IMM 5292 or IMM 5688.

What You Can Amend on Your Record of Landing/COPR

You can amend your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) if there is a typo or other incorrect information on it. You will need to prove that the information contained in your document is incorrect in order to get that information corrected.

You can request to change your Record of Landing only in the following case: To correct any errors made by Canadian immigration officials in recording the information you provided when you landed as a permanent resident in Canada. This includes:

• Family name
• Given name(s)
• Date of birth
• Place of birth
• Country of birth
• Citizenship
• Sex
• Marital status
• Date of original entry
• Date of landing,

Any error on your Record of Landing or COPR is a problem because this information is used for your PR Card, for example. However, please remember that you cannot use your Record of Landing/COPR to apply for a new PR Card. As well, when you apply for your Old Age Security pension, or OAS, the information on your Record of Landing/COPR is used as proof of how long you have lived in Canada as well as for your personal details.

   If your request was approved, you will receive a Verification of Status (VOS) document which will indicate that the change you requested was made in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s system. This VOS document is just as valid as your old landing paper.

What you Cannot Amend

You cannot change any personal information that has changed since the date you were granted permanent residence. This means, for example, that you cannot request to amend your Record of Landing to reflect any of the below changes:

Amending Your Name – Name Changes since you landed in Canada

• Legal name change (after receiving your Record of Landing);
• Name change due to marriage or divorce (after receiving your Record of Landing).

Contact the Registrar General of the province or territory in which you live to have your identity documents updated as a result of changes to your personal information.

Remember, your Record of Landing or COPR is NOT an identity document and cannot be used to verify your identity or replace a passport or PR Card.

Changing your name to a name different than the name you landed in Canada under

IRCC policy requires the full name used in your immigration file and immigration documents must match the full name in the bar code of the passport you used to enter Canada with. You cannot amend your name(s) in your Record of Landing or COPR to a full name that does not match the name on the passport you used to enter Canada.

However, if you have been given an adopted name, IRCC will take that into account when you apply for Canadian citizenship. You will be given a Citizenship Certificate with your new adopted name when you receive your citizenship. You must present supporting documents.

We’ve given you the simplified 6-step approach to amending your Record of Landing/COPR above, so now it’s time to get into the details of the process.

Amending Your Record of Landing or COPR

As we briefly describe above, in order to amend your Record of Landing or your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, you must complete the form IMM 1436 Request to Amend the Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence or Valid Temporary Resident documents and provide all required supporting documentation.

You must gather the required documents for your application to amend your Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence. These include:

• Form IMM 1436E: Request to Amend The Record of Landing (IMM 1000), Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292, or IMM 5688), or Valid Temporary Resident Documents. This form must completed in full and signed by you the applicant. (See below)
• Photocopy of one piece of federal, or provincial/territorial government-issued photo ID. OR if unavailable, a government-issued or internationally recognized photo document. This includes:
  • Driver’s licence
  • Photo health card
  • Passport or Travel Document used to enter Canada with the photocopied pages showing the following:
    • Passport number
    • Date of Issue and Date of Expiry
    • Photo
    • Name, Date, Place of Birth

    If you no longer have your passport used to enter Canada, photocopy the relevant pages from your current passport. Your application will take longer if you do not have your original passport used to enter Canada. Please use the name from your original passport used to enter Canada when filling out your application form IMM 1436E.

    • Marriage Certificate
    • Birth Certificate
    • If the country in which you were born does not or did not issue birth certificates, include alternate documents such as:
      • Baptismal Certificate
      • Family Composition Form
      • School Records
      • Identity Cards
      • Name changes
      • Sex changes
      • Date of Birth changes

      As long as these changes occurred BEFORE you were granted permanent residence or entered Canada.

      • Immediate loss of employment due to lack of proof of immigration status. Include an original letter (NOT a photocopy) from your employer indicating that you will lose your employment unless you obtain your updated Record of Landing.
      • Serious delay of your application due to administrative error by a Canadian immigration official. Include any letters, emails or other documents that support and explain the error and your situation.
      • You are unable to receive urgent government services from the federal, provincial or municipal government concerned, including OAS pensions, medically urgent health services, or a Social Insurance Number (SIN) necessary for employment. Include: photocopies of letters/documents from the federal/provincial/municipal government, ORInclude: an original letter from your employer, OR Include: a letter explaining the urgency of your situation, OR Include: any other government documents that show the urgency of your situation.
      • Photocopy of Death Certificate or, Provincial/Territorial Vital Statistics document if you are applying on behalf of a deceased person.

      Filling out Form IMM 1436E Request to Amend the Record of Landing/COPR

      How to complete A Request to Amend the Record of Landing IMM 1000, Confirmation of Permanent Residence IMM 5292, or IMM 5688, Or Valid Temporary Resident Documents. See a completed sample version of this form.

      Completing Part A of the IMM 1436: Personal Information

      1. Client ID number/UCI: Fill in your Client Identification Number (Client ID), or Unique Client Identifier (UCI). If you have not dealt with CIC (IRCC) since 1973, you will not have Client ID or UCI, in which case you should leave this question blank.
      2. Surname(s) (Family name) (As it currently appears on your document): Fill in your surname as it currently appears on your document.
      3. Given name(s) (As it currently appears on your document): Fill in your given names as they currently appear on your document.
      4. Other name(s) used: Fill in all the other surnames you have ever used. Give any different spellings that may be involved along with an explanation. For example: Hassan (birth name/maiden name); Trump (former married name).
      5. Other given name(s) used: Fill in all the other given names you have ever used, including nicknames, along with an explanation. For example: Elvis (nickname).
      6. Sex: Indicate your sex (male or female) as it appears on the document you are applying to amend.
      7. Date of birth: Indicate your date of birth as follows: YYYY-MM-DD (year-month-day).
      8. Place of birth (City, state/province and country): Indicate your place of birth including city, province or state, and country.
      9. Citizenship: Indicate your current citizenship. If you have dual citizenship, select the citizenship of the country whose passport you used to enter Canada.
      10. Passport Number: Indicate your passport or travel document number that you used to enter Canada. If you don’t have your original passport used to enter Canada, enter your current passport number, and check the appropriate box “on entry” (the one you used to enter Canada, or “current” (your current passport or travel document).
      11. Date of issue: Indicate date of issue of passport or travel document you used to fill in question 10. Use the YYYY-MM-DD (year-month-day) format.
      12. Expiry date: Indicate the expiry date of passport or travel document used in question 10. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format.
      13. Marital status: Check the box that applies to your Marital Status when you first entered Canada:
          • Never married
          • Married: your marriage must be legally recognized in the country in which you were married as well as in Canada.
          • Widowed: your spouse has died and you have NOT remarried or entered into a common-law relationship.
          • Separated: you are married but no longer officially living with your spouse.
          • Divorced: you are officially separated and have legally ended your marriage.
          • Common-Law partner: you have lived with your partner in a common-law relationship for at least one year.
      14. Language of correspondence: Indicate whether you want to communicate in English or French.
      15. Current mailing address: Indicate your current mailing address. Including:
          • Post Office Box number (if applicable)
          • Apartment or Unit number (if applicable)
          • Street number
          • Street name
          • City or town
          • Country
          • Province/State
          • Postal Code
          • District (if applicable)
      16. Residential address Same as mailing address?: Indicate your current residential address, if different from mailing address.
      17. Telephone no.: Indicate your telephone number including area and country codes and indicate if it is a number in Canada or the USA.
      18. Alternate Telephone no.: Indicate your alternate phone number (cellular, business, mobile) including area and country codes. Indicate if it is a number in Canada, the USA, or another country.
      19. E-mail address: (Indicating an e-mail address will authorize all correspondence, including files and personal information, to be sent to the e-mail address you specify.): Indicate your email address. You will automatically be authorizing correspondence by email on the part of IRCC that will include personal information.
      20. Date of original entry: Indicate the date you originally entered Canada. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format.
      21. Date permanent residence or temporary residence was granted: Indicate the date that permanent residence was granted to you. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format.

      Completing Part B of the IMM 1436: Information to Be Amended

      This is where you indicate what information on your Record of Landing or COPR should be corrected. In each of the questions listed below, if you do NOT want the information changed because it is already correct, leave the section blank.

      1. Please indicate for which of the following you need a correction: Indicate what type of document needs to be corrected. In your case, you should tick the first box: Immigrant Visa and Record of Landing – Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
      2. Surname(s) (Family name): Indicate your surname as it should appear on your Record of Landing – COPR. Remember to leave this blank if the information is already correct.
      3. Given name(s): Indicate your given name as it should appear on your document. If correct, then leave this blank.
      4. Date of birth: Indicate date of your birth as it should appear on your document. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format. If already correct, leave the section blank.
      5. Place of birth (City, state/province): Indicate your place of birth as it should appear on your document. Use the city, state/province format. If already correct, leave the section blank.
      6. Country of birth: Indicate your country of birth as it should appear on your document. If already correct, leave the section blank.
      7. Citizenship: Indicate which country or countries you are a citizen of, as it should appear on your document. If already correct, leave this blank.
      8. Sex: Indicate your sex as it should appear on your document. If already correct, leave this blank.
      9. Marital status: Indicate your marital status as it should appear on your document. Remember, if your marriage status changed after you entered Canada, you cannot request to have it changed by this method. You must contact your provincial/territorial registrar. If already correct, leave the section blank.
      10. Date of original entry: Indicate your date of entry into Canada as it should appear on your document. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format. If already correct, leave this blank.
      11. Date permanent residence or temporary residence was granted : Indicate the date permanent residence was granted as it should appear on your document. Use the YYYY-MM-DD format. If already correct, leave the section blank.
      12. Other change (Provide a description in PART C, section 2 below): Use this section to indicate any changes that should be made that are not covered by questions 1 through 11. Otherwise, leave this section blank.

      Completing Part C of the IMM 1436: Criminal Offences

      This section deals with any criminal offences you may have committed in Canada or elsewhere. It is very important to answer this section truthfully and completely.

      1. If you are applying for an amendment to your IMM 1000, IMM 5292 or IMM 5688 and you are not a Canadian citizen, have you, since your admission to Canada
         as a permanent resident, been convicted of a crime or offence in Canada or elsewhere? If you have been convicted of a crime or offence in Canada or elsewhere you must check the “yes” box. You must also attach copies of any relevant court documents.
      2. Reasons for requesting the amendment(s). (Attach another sheet if you need more space.): In the space provided, write an explanation of why your information related to criminal offences should be changed. You may add another sheet of paper to the form, if you need extra space. You should:
         • Outline the error that was made by immigration officials;
         • Detail what information was provided in your application;
         • Give the necessary details for why a change is required.

      Completing a Use of a Representative form to Amend Your Record of Landing/COPR

      If you are using a representative you must fill out Form IMM 5476: Use of a Representative:

      1. Compensated Representative: if your representative is being paid a fee for his or her services, then they must be one of the following:
         • A consultant who is a member in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), OR
         • Lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing of their provincial/territorial law society, OR
         • Notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambres des notaires du Quebec.

      If you wish to authorize IRCC to release your information to someone other than your representative, then you must fill out Form IMM 5475 Authority to Release Information to a Designated Individual.

      • Write Urgent in clear, bold letters on the envelope.

      Receiving a Response to Your Request to Amend Your Record of Landing/COPR

      If your application is approved, you will receive a Verification of Status document that will detail for you the changes made to your information in CIC (IRCC)’s system.

      Whenever asked to present your entry documents, always have your copy of your Verification of Status (VOS) document along with your Record of Landing IMM 1000, or Confirmation of Permanent Residence IMM 5292, or IMM 5688.

      If your request is refused, you will receive notice of such along with the reasons for IRCC’s refusal. You will also have your original copies returned to you.

      FAQ

      • What is a landing paper?
        A landing paper is proof of your landing in Canada. It was known as a Record of Landing (IMM 1000) until 2002. Since then, it is known as a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). However, because your COPR is issued to you before you arrive in Canada, it must indicate that you landed in Canada, otherwise it is not a landing paper. A landing paper is used to help verify your eligibility for Canadian Citizenship and it is also used to prove your residence in Canada for Old Age Security (OAS).
      • There is an error on my Record of Landing/COPR. What do I do?
        If there is a mistake on your landing paper, you can get the record amended so that it accurately depicts who you are. If the mistake was made by IRCC, then you can get this fixed free of charge. However, if the mistake was on one of your documents from your home country when you landed, you will have to make sure your identity documents are correct first and then you will have to pay for IRCC to make the change and issue a corrected Verification of Status.
      • Why can’t I get a new Record of Landing/COPR?
        IRCC has stopped issuing replacement landing documents. Instead, IRCC issues an electronic document known as a Verification of Status or VOS, which is accepted by all levels of government in Canada. Not only is it just as valid as your old landing document, but you can now replace it if you ever lose the hard copy.
